刘纪远,1947年5月出生于上海市,研究员,博士生导师。1981年毕业于中国科学院研究生院,获地图学与遥感专业硕士学位。1999-2007年任中国科学院地理科学与资源研究所所长。现兼任国家环保总局科技委员会委员,科技部国家遥感中心专家委员会委员,中国自然资源学会理事长,中国地理学会常务理事,IGBP和IHDP中国国家委员会常委,全球陆地系统计划科学指导委员会委员,《中国科学》D辑编委,国际土地利用科学学报编委。

80年代初起,先后主持西藏土地资源遥感调查、全国资源环境遥感宏观调查与动态研究、国土环境遥感时空信息分析、国家973项目“中国陆地生态系统碳循环及其驱动机制研究”、国家支撑计划项目“国家生态恢复重建的综合监测评估关键技术研发”等重大项目。先后担任联合国MA计划“中国西部生态系统综合评估”,以及中美、中日、中加、中德等国际合作项目的中方首席科学家。主持的成果曾先后获国家科技进步二等奖、三等奖,中国科学院科技进步特等奖、一等奖,以及部级科技进步特等奖、一等奖。共发表研究论文200余篇,其中SCI论文60余篇,专著4部。
