JOB SPECIFICATION


  1. Summary of the broad purpose of the position in relation to the organisation’s goals (its expected outcome and how it is achieved).

The Personal Care Assistant has acquired skills which will enable them to deliver direct personal care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse to residents within the practice setting of Melaleuca Court Nursing Home which is a High Level, 35 bed Aged Care Facility.




  1. Reporting/working relationships (to whom the person reports, staff for whom the person is responsible and other significant connections and working relationships.




  • Responsible to Executive Officer/Director of Nursing for the provision of ________________________________________________ within Yorke Peninsula Health.

  • Accepts guidance and advice from and liaises with Team Leader/Registered Nurse of the day (as appropriate) so as to ensure effective service provision, decision making and problem solving.

  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other health service staff, visitors, contractors, volunteers and suppliers.

  1. KEY OUTCOMES AND ASSOCIATED ACTIVITIES

4.1 Personal Care Skills

  • Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse gives direct care to a group of residents utilising the nursing process.

  • Carries out nursing care plans in consultation with a Registered Nurse.

  • In consultation with the Registered Nurse evaluates resident care in relation to the nursing care plan and participates in re-planning.

  • Communicates resident’s needs to the Registered Nurse.

4.2 Professional Conduct and Development

  • Complies with the YP Health Services conditions of employment, in particular with regard to the confidentiality policy.

  • Acts to rectify unsafe care practice or unprofessional conduct.

  • Practices within own abilities and qualifications.

  • Promotes an atmosphere which is conducive to learning and safety for residents and staff.

  • Uses and promotes effective communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Participates in activities designed to maintain or improve the quality of care for residents.

  • Participates in in-service education activities within the facility.

  • Evaluates own practice by performance appraisal and reflective practice methodologies.

4.3 Responsible For a Safe Working Environment

  • Complying with Yorke Peninsula Health. Policies, Procedures, Outcome Statements found in the Manuals.

  • Complying with procedures for safe handling, use and storage of chemicals (including utilising the MSDS information).

  • Utilising information (i.e. safe operating procedures/manufacturers instructions), training/education when using machinery, utensils and equipment.

  • Understanding the Fire and Emergency Evacuation Plan and procedures incorporating the use of fire fighting equipment.

  • Reporting all hazards and incidents (including near misses) at work to the EO/DON with appropriate documentation.

  • Reporting equipment/building deficits and problems to the Maintenance Officer, Team Leader and/or EO/DON and ensuring that the unsafe equipment is removed from use and tagged as unsafe.

  • Ensuring security systems and standards are maintained.

  • Identifies and manages risks by eliminating or containing them during the working day.

4.4 Participates In Continuous Quality Improvement Activities with the Health Service

  • Attending in-service education and training regarding quality.

  • Gaining knowledge about aged care standards regarding quality care and services and utilising this at work for improved care and services to Residents.

  • Suggesting improvements for the Health Service and recording these ideas.

  • Participating in quality activities designed to improve the Health Service.


4.5 Maintains the Highest Standard of Infection Control, Hygiene and Sanitation

  • Complying with the recommended standards and procedures particularly in relation to personal hygiene and care of uniforms.

  • Complying with legislation, Australian standards, policies and procedures in relation to safe food handling and storage.

  • Complying with legislation, Australian standards, policies and procedures in relation to management of refuse and contamination containment.

  • Wearing appropriate footwear, clothing (including gloves and hair coverings and other safety equipment as required.

4.6 Participates with Team Leader and EO/DON in Initial Probationary Appraisal And Then Following Regular Appraisals.

Experience


  • Demonstrated experience in a range of practice settings.

  • Aged Care Nursing experience an advantage.


Knowledge


  • Demonstrated knowledge of the nursing process and quality assurance.

  • Has developed a level of interpersonal skills which enable him/her to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, residents, relatives and the community in a pleasant and professional manner.

  • Demonstrates an understanding and commitment to current concepts of care for the aged associated with the Outcomes and Guidelines for Residential Aged Care Services.

  • Has an understanding of Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare.



DESIRABLE CHARACTERISTICS (to distinguish between those applicants who have met all of the essential requirements).
Education


  • Successful completion of or working towards Certificate 3 Aged Care.


Experience

Knowledge


  • Knowledge of occupational health, safety and welfare legislative requirements, practices including manual handling.

  • Knowledge of industry regulations and Australian standards and expectations related to the provision of aged care.
