guilty!
Simba: No. I'm not a murderer.
Scar: Oh Simba, you're in trouble again. But this time, Daddy isn't here to save you. And now everyone knows why!
{Scar has been backing Simba up the length of Pride Rock. After his last sentence, Simba slips over the edge and is clinging to the ledge by his forepaws. Lightning strikes below, igniting the dry brush.}
Nala: Simba!
{Scar sits back and pretends to think.}
Scar: Now this looks familiar. Hmm. Where have I seen this before. Let me think. Hmmm... hmmm. Oh yes, I remember. This is just the way your father looked before he died.
{Scar grabs Simba with his claws as he did Mufasa. He whispers into Simba's ear.}
And here's my little secret. I killed Mufasa.
{Simba has a quick memory flash back to that fateful instant. His voice blends with his younger voice in the scream of when his father died. In one giant leap he lunges up and pins Scar on his back. Scar is caught completely by surprise and is understandably very nervous and shaken.}
Simba: NoooooOOO.... MURDERER!
{The lionesses are surprised at this sudden change.}
Scar: No, Simba please.
Simba: Tell them the truth.
Scar: Truth? But, truth is in the eye of the beholdllgkkk…!
{Simba starts to choke Scar.}
All right. All right. {quietly, venemously} I did it.
Simba: So they can hear you.
Scar: {Grudgingly, but clear} I ... killed ... Mufasa!
{Nala starts towards Scar, the hyenas attack Simba in a wall of teeth. The lionesses join in, attacking the hyenas. We see Pumbaa and Timon come in. Pumbaa charges with Timon riding him; hyenas fly everywhere.}

Pumbaa: Heyyy-yaaaaah!!

Timon: ‘Scuse me. Pardon me. Comin’ through. Hot stuff. Whoo!
{Bowling strike sound effect as hyenas fly. Rafiki whacks a hyena off of Simba. Camera switch to him; with a battle scream, he joins the fray. As a bit of comic relief, Rafiki is fighting in kung-fu "B-movie" style, complete with cheesy sound effects.}

Rafiki: {As he hits various hyenas} wwwA! Hozah! Hazoww! Yaa! Yah! hhyEEOOWww!

{Camera switch to Timon running from Shenzi. He runs into the cave. Zazu spots him. Timon runs into his cage for safety from the hyenas.}
Zazu: Let me out! Let me out!
Timon: Let me in let me in! {to the hyenas, pleading} Pleeease don't eat me.
{Pumbaa appears at the cave's entrance.}
Pumbaa: Problem?
Banzai: Hey, who's the pig?
Pumbaa: Are you talking to me?
Timon: Uh oh. They called him a pig.
Pumbaa: Are you talking to me?!
Timon: Shouldn't ‘a done that.
Pumbaa: ARE YOU TALKING TO ME?!?
Timon: Now they're in for it.
Pumbaa: THEY CALL ME.. MISTER PIIIG! AAAAAAAAAAA--
{Pumbaa charges and drives the hyenas off.}
Timon: Take that! And that! {etc.}

Banzai: Ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ...

Pumbaa: Take that! And that! {etc.} You yellow belly...

Zazu: Take that, you stupid... {etc.}

{They start the Arsenio hall “Ooh, ooh” chant. The scene switches to Simba chasing Scar up to the high point of Pride Rock. Scar runs up to the edge and sees the sheer drop. Simba leaps up to confront him and the cliff like edge. Scar is very apprehensive, seeing he is cornered and at Simba’s mercy.}

Simba: {Quietly, severely} Murderer.

Scar: Simba, Simba. Please. Please have mercy. I beg you.
Simba: You don't deserve to live.
Scar: But, Simba, I am ... ah ... {unsure of his tactic} family. It's the hyenas {regaining composure} who are the real enemy. It was their fault-- it was their idea!
{Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed are in the background. They overhear and back away growling at Scar's betrayal.}
Simba: Why should I believe you? Everything you ever told me was a lie.
Scar: What are you going to do? You wouldn't kill your old Uncle...? {ingratiating grin}
Simba: No, Scar. I'm not like you.
Scar: {Greatly relieved} Oh, Simba, thank you. You are truly noble. {aside} I'll make it up to you, I promise. {standing up} How can I, ah, prove myself to you? Tell me, I mean, anything.
Simba: {Gravely, with deep anger} Run. Run away, Scar. And never return.
Scar: Yes. Of course.... As you wish, {looking down and seeing a pile of hot coals.} your Majesty! {Scar swipes the coals into Simba’s face. With a cry of surprise and pain, Simba paws the coals away as Scar leaps and attacks.}
{There is a fight in slow motion. Both Scar and Simba land heavy

blows. Simba gets knocked on his back. Scar leaps through the

flames at him. Simba gathers courage and uses Scar's momentum in a

"throw" similar to Nala's fighting tactics to send him flying over the

edge28. Scar tumbles to the bottom. He weakly gets up. He sees Banzai,

Shenzi, and Ed approaching and smiles. Ed has a very angry look on his

face.}
Scar: Ahh, my friends.
Shenzi: Frie-he-hends? I thought he said we were the enemy!
Banzai: Yeah, that's what I heard.
Banzai and Shenzi: Ed?
Ed: {Laughs evilly}
Scar: {Very nervous} No. L-L-L-Le-Le-Le-Le-Let me explain. No. You don't understand. No! I didn't mean for... No, No! Look, I’m sorry I called you... No! NOO!29
{The camera moves away and we can only see the shadows as the horde of hyenas close in on and attack Scar. Rain opens up and douses the fire. Simba comes down and greets his mother and Nala. Rafiki motions for Simba to ascend Pride Rock as king. Simba starts up and pauses to hug Rafiki as his father did.}
Rafiki: It is time.
{Very majestically, Simba ascends. Music is strong. At the tip of the rock Simba looks up through the rain. Through a hole in the clouds we can see a patch of stars. One bright star shines out briefly.}
Mufasa: Remember . . .
{ Simba's expression gains confidence and strength. He roars. The lionesses roar in reply. Time switch to the Savannah in full bloom again. Cue “Busa” theme:}

{Simba, Timon, Pumbaa, and Nala are on Pride Rock. Zazu flies up to the point. Timon, of course, is shaking his arms in the classic victory sign. All the various groups of herds are there, making noise as in the presentation of Simba.}

1 See the FAQ (at http://www.lionking.org/faq.html) for a full discussion of the name of Simba’s and Nala’s cub. When the sequel (Simba’s Pride) is released, we will know for sure what the cub’s name is, and whether it is male or female.

2 I’d just like to announce here that TLK won the years American Music Award. Yaay!

3 Look here. As Zazu flies up to greet Mufasa, we notice just how far out into space the tip of Pride Rock juts. Mufasa is standing way out there on the edge of the rock. Now Rafiki approaches, and the animals make way for him. Cut to Mufasa, still sitting near the edge. Rafiki comes up over the front of the rock to embrace Mufasa. Now just how the heck did Rafiki do that? As admiral@jhunix.hcf.jhu.edu writes, “Maybe he has a really good vertical.” 

4 Go ahead, count ‘em up and see if this isn’t the exact number. 

5 Though only apparent in the lower-quality prints of the film, the painted background for this shot has visible water damage. 

6 cooped@mercury.sfsu.edu wrote: “Did anyone think the kid singing IJCWtbK sounded like Michael Jackson when he had his real nose? [Jackson 5 era, Motown] Anyone? Anyone?” … And the answer is? Jason Weaver (Young Simba’s singing voice) played young Michael Jackson in the TV movie “The Jacksons” back in the 80’s. Good ear, cooped@mercury.sfsu.edu. 

7 R.a.d. sources report the anteater to be a native of South America. Same with the leaf-cutter ants seen in the opening sequence. Oops... 

8 This is either methane from corpse decomposition or steam from some underground hot spring (volcanic activity on the Savannah?!). It’s alternately red, yellow, or green depending on the particular background. The book “The Art of the Lion King” and the TLK “Animated Storybook” CD-ROM both refer to it as steam, though, so steam it is. (To get the storybook to mention steam you have to ask Rafiki to define the word “geyser”, I recall.) Your guess is as good as mine as to why it’s so varied in color.

9 In an early concept painting of this background, the skull is MUCH larger and is not planted in the ground but instead resting in a large pool of grayish liquid. Perhaps later the skull was moved to dry land to double as the hideout of the three hyenas. In early storyboards, this was probably the case... Exploring in the graveyard, Simba and Nala stumble into the front yard of Shenzi, Banzai, and Eds’ home. The hyenas chase the cubs; Scar sees this; Scar formulates his plan to use the hyenas. I suppose the problem they had with this is that they would have to justify Scar’s initial tricking of Simba somehow, without involving the hyenas. And so, that is the reason the intro to “Be Prepared” was cut.

10 See that tiny little tree in the background? Isn’t that tree way too small compared to the canyon wall it is right next to? The canyon floor didn’t look THAT wide from above... :)

11 It is a custom for villains to cast ominous shadows when they do their stuff.... But what the heck is making that spotlight from the bottom of the gorge?!

12 This COULD be “Broth-” or a meaningless grunt. You Make the Call(tm). :)

13 Okay now, look here. Shot of Simba silhouetted against the sunset as he rolls roughly down the hill. A bit later: shot of Simba running away from the hill, directly into the sunset. Do we have a background problem here or what? Oh well-- it looked pretty both times.

14 If you listen carefully, Timon and Pumbaa’s yell originates directly from the rear of the surround setup- and passes over/through you until it is heard in the front speakers, when you first see them charging. Nice effect.

15 R.a.d. sources have told me that the actor who did the voice of Ed, Jim Cummings, also thought of this line for Pumbaa’s song. Could be!...

16 Inside sources report that when all the bugs come pouring out of the hole, one of them (possibly an ant) is wearing Mickey Mouse ears. This happens so fast that it is almost impossible to catch, but it is said to be there. Another of the bugs has the three black circles on it’s back, but is shot out of focus and very blurry. (Thanks to Rich_Carol_Koster@cup.portal.com)

17 I observe here, with some regret, that marching Simba falls victim to the dreaded cartoon sliding-backwards-feet syndrome. It’s not as severe a case as found in any episode of Scooby Doo, but it’s there nonetheless. Sigh.

18 This is the actual Zulu spelling of the chant, as written in the “Rhythm of the Pride Lands” lyric book. In the 60’s, the Tokens, in their adaptation of the South Aftican traditional song, spelled it “Weemoweh” in order to release it publicly.

19 Folks like btman@lionking.org and Matt@machine.demon.co.uk are noticing the subtle style changes that the Disney animators worked into their characters at appropriate moments. Matt wrote: “The "fighting"-type scenes in TLK are noticeably more realistic-- the eyes are lower, the mouths are bigger, the faces lose their "flatness"... in scenes where the dialogue is prominent, the faces look a lot more "human." I would like to point out that in this shot you can clearly “see” Matthew Broderick’s facial structure and expression in Simba. It’s quite fascinating, and a bit unnerving.

20 Lions don’t purr…

21 What do you think of Simba’s expressions during this exchange? Definitely not your stereotypical movie-male. I may be reading things in, but Nala is quite the aggressor while Simba is pretty much surprised by it all. I rather enjoy Simba and Nala’s relationship, as a refreshing change from typical movie romance. Thumbs up to the writers/directors/animators.

22 A r.a.d. poster cited a possible hidden Mickey here. I think I may have seen it, too. When Mufasa is first “walking from the stars”, and his entire body is in view, look at the swirling clouds on the far left of the screen- a bit more than halfway up. For an instant, a Mickey-head forms there. Of course, I suppose if I stared hard enough I could see an image of ol’ Walt himself. Or perhaps Tezuka. You never can tell...! 

23 I actually hear this first line only as "This land, invincible."

24 It can be noted here, with some regret, that the sun is setting in the same direction that it rose on Pride Rock in the scene where Simba and Mufasa are watching it in the beginning of the movie. Oops. I guess they had a soft spot for theatrical lighting. I can excuse the “villain” shadow Scar casts while pacing in the canyon, even the green light making those grisly hyena silhouettes,- but reversing the direction of the sun itself? Hmmm! There is an explanation for this AND the above error though: During Simba’s absence, an earthquake of such magnitude occurred that Pride Rock rotated a full 180! 

25 Someone on r.a.d. pointed out that a possible “hidden Mickey” could be found here. I am not exactly sure what frame they were referring to, but I have seen what may be a mouse-head-like shadow around Sarabi’s head in the shot that pans from Simba as he climbs down the ledge to Sarabi as she lies on the ground. You Make the Call.

26 Regarding this dialogue, Brian Tiemann wrote: “When Scar backhands Sarabi to the floor, after she says "If you were half the king Mufasa was you'd...", I (believe it or not) thought I heard "I AM half the king Mufasa was!" Sort of a Freudian slip it would have been, and quite funny and applicable. Sort of unfortunate that it wasn't the true text. =)”

27 Where the rocks form a ‘V’, one of the hyenas is actually a schnauzer. It’s in silhouette, so watch for it carefully. No, I am not making this up! Actual sight gag, put in on purpose! I have not been able to spot it, however. ...The shot is only about 1/3 a second long, and is only visible on the wide-screen version of the movie (i.e., the laserdisc)— it’s just at the edge of the pan-and-scan viewing area.

28 Simba uses the same back-feet-pushing move that Nala used to reverse landing positions in his pounces on her- could it be that Simba eventually learned this move from his bouts with Nala? The Lion King “Little Golden Book” says (and I quote): “...Simba used Nala’s trick flip to send Scar flying over the cliff to the hungry hyenas below.” I rest my case! :)

29 That last bit, “I’m sorry I called you” is actually in there, as far as I can tell. I’ve rewound the tape ten or fifteen times. Yes, it’s odd that ol’ Scar would apologize for anything, isn’t it? But that’s what I heard... ;)

30 A sequel is in the works. Keep an eye on the Rumor Mill at www.lionking.org/rumors.html for the latest news about the sequel, titled (for now) “Simba’s Pride”.
