BUXTON HEATH WILDLIFE GROUP

STUDY DAY

Birds: Woodlark Lullula arborea (Valley Mire, on electricity wire), Willow Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus, Chiffchaff P. collybita, Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla, Magpie Pica pica, Turtle Dove Streptopelia turtur, Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella, Reed Bunting E. schoeniclus (singing from Reed Bed), Mistle Thrush Turdus viscivorus.
Mammals: Bank Vole Clethrionomys glareolus (found dead in Mervyn Williamson's meadow).
Moths: Silver Y Autographa gamma, Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet Zygaena lonicerae (cocoons found high up on Soft Rush stems - Western Mire), Straw Dot Rivula sericealis (Western Mire), Broad-bordered Bee Hawkmoth Hemaris fuciformis (round green eggs, small green larvae and holes caused by their feeding. All this found on Honeysuckle which was growing up through a small Hawthorn tree which we left in place during our scrub clearance, just north of the Southern Track), Latticed Heath Semiothisa clathrata, unknown caterpillar (photographed).
Butterflies: Green-veined White Artogeia napi, Green Hairstreak Callophrys rubi (2 seen beside Northern Track - photos), Large White Pieris brassicae, Common Blue Polyommatus icarus, Painted Lady Cynthia cardui, Peacock Inachis io, Brimstone Gonepteryx rhamni (male).
Coleoptera: Garden Chafer Phyllopertha horticola (several), Leaf Beetle Phaedon cochleariae, 14-spot Ladybird Propylea 14-punctata, Green Tiger Beetle Cicindela campestris, Red-tipped Flower Beetle Malachius bipustulatus (Mervyn's meadow), Whirligig Beetle Gyrinus natator (on stream in Mervyn's).
Odonata: Four-spotted Chaser Libellula quadrimaculata, Broad-bodied Chaser L. depressa, Large Red Damselfly Pyrrhosoma nymphula, Azure Damselfly Coenagrion puella, Blue-tailed Damselfly Ischnura elegans.
Hemiptera: Common Green Shield Bug Palomena prasina, Froghopper Ditropis pteridis (distinctive brown & yellow bands, found on Bracken - males and females seen).
Orthoptera: Slender Groundhopper Tetrix subulata, Common Groundhopper T. undulata.

Plant Galls: Bedstraw Shoot Gall Geocrypta gallii (widespread throughout mire), Midge Iteomyia capreae (red pustules of leaves of Goat Willow Salix caprea), Sawfly Pontania bridgemanii (bean galls on leaves of Goat Willow), Midge Dasineura auritae (leaf edge rolled tightly downwards - Grey Sallow Salix cinerea), Midge Iteomyia major (hard irregular swelling on leaf ribs of Grey Sallow).
Misc. insects: Crane-fly Tipula maxima, Gooseberry Sawfly Nematus ribesii, Snipe-fly Rhagio scolopacea, Scorpion Fly Panorpa communis (female), Spider Hunting Wasp (black, red abdomen, wings flicking).
Herptiles: Common Frog Rana temporaria, Common Toad Bufo bufo, Common Lizard Lacerta vivipara, Slow-worm Anguis fragilis (four small bronze examples under the corrugated tin sheet on the South-west Heath), Grass Snake Natrix natrix (Mervyn's meadows).
Araneae: Wolf Spider Pisaura mirabilis, Orb-web Spider Araniella cucurbitina, elongated spider with curved body and legs held out in front (?), Comb-footed Spider Theridion pallens (tiny females guarding distinctive white egg case on underside of Oak leaves - many seen in various parts of site + one sighting on Honeysuckle).
Amphipods: Freshwater Shrimp Gammarus pulex (open water of Western Mire).
In flower: Yellow (Flag) Iris Iris pseudacorus, Water Forget-me-not Myosotis scorpioides, Bell Heather Erica cinerea, Cross-leaved Heath E. tetralix, Climbing Corydalis Corydalis claviculata (west of Woodland Spine), Sheep's Sorrel Rumex acetosella, Common Sorrel R. acetosa, Marsh Cinquefoil Potentilla palustris, Tormentil P. erecta, Creeping Buttercup Ranunculus repens, Lesser Spearwort R. flammula, Common Duckweed Lemna minor (on areas of open water in the western Mire), Common Milkwort Polygala vulgaris, Lady's Smock Cardamine pratensis, Ragged Robin Lychnis flos-cuculi, Yellow Rattle Rhinanthus minor, Red Clover Trifolium pratense, Marsh Valerian Valeriana dioica, Common Cotton-grass Eriophorum angustifolium, Field Wood-rush Luzula campestris, Common Sedge Carex nigra, Southern Marsh Orchid Dactylorhiza praetermissa, Heath Spotted Orchid D. maculata, Common Spotted Orchid D. fuchsii, Bog Pimpernel Anagallis tenella (buds), Quaking Grass Briza media, Common Butterwort Pinguicula vulgaris, Marsh Lousewort Pedicularis palustris, Black Bog-rush Schoenus nigricans, Honeysuckle Lonicera periclymenum, Common Twayblade Listera ovata, Daisy Bellis perennis (Mervyn's meadow), Watercress Nasturtium officinale.
Not in flower: Square-stemmed St John's-wort Hypericum tetrapterum, Bogbean Menyanthes trifoliata (Mervyn's meadows).
