Fuhsing Temple at Shi-liu-ku(十六股復興宮)

Name of Scenic Spot: Fuhsing Temple at Shi-liu-ku

Name of Town: Hualien City

Name of County: Hualien County

Category of Scenic Spot: Historic Establishments

Brief Introduction: Yen-pin Prefecture Temple (also called Fuhsing Temple) has been classified as a third-class historic site. It is the oldest temple in Hualien County, located in the center of the Shi-liu-ku (now Feng-chun) area, the place of origin of the history of Hualien City. In the Ching Dynasty, the site of now Hualien City was called “Chilai.” The first Han people to come to Chilai and settle down was Huang A-feng from Tamsui, Taipei. In the first year of Emperor Hsienfeng (1851), Huang collected a fund from 16 persons and recruited 2200 tenant farmers to come and cultivate the land. The earliest site of their cultivation was named Shi-liu-ku Village (meaning “Sixteen Shares” Village, to commemorate the 16 persons who made the investments on the fund). It is said that, to appease the hearts of the tenant farmers, Huang had sent for an idol of Koxinga from the original Koxinga Shrine in Tainan, with flags and incense for protection on their voyage. When they arrived, a temple was built of wood and straw to enshrine the holy idol, and it was the origin of the Temple. Between the eighth year of Hsienfeng and the Reign of Tungchih, because of the raids and attacks of the native tribes, Shi-liu-ku Vilage was once completely destroyed, with all the residents massacred, and had been deserted for a period of six or seven years. In the first year of Kuanghsu (1875), Lin chang-an, a leader of tenant farmers, led his crew to followed the Ching soldiers “to develop the northern part of the Place Behind the Mountains.” They took over the old settlement, and changed the name “Shi-liu-ku Viilage” to “Fuhsing Village” (Restoration Village), and renamed the straw temple as “Fuhsing Temple,” to announce the determination of re-settling on the site. To increase the Han stenghth, Lin worked very hard to recruit more settlers, and expanded the settlement to the areas of Non-pin and Chun-wei. At that time, two towers were erected, with a bell and a drum on them, respectively, for watching. When signs of the native tribes were detected, the bell and the drum would be sounded for warning. In the fourth year of Kuanghsu, the “Battle at Kalewan” exploded, and Fuhsing Village was attacked by the Sakilayas. The settlers withdrew in defeat, and Fuhsing Temple was destroyed. In the sixteenth year of Kuanghsu, the native tribes were appeased, and a new Koxinga Temple was built by the settlers and was still named Fuhsing Temple. The leaders made an greetment of collecting a part of the harvests as the property of the Temple to subsidize “New Guests”(new settlers). Fuhsing Temple thus became a center of religion and cooperation of the Han people.
On October 22, 1951, a great earthquake rocked Hualien, and the Temple was shattered in seconds. Local esquire Cheng Tung-hsin raised a donation fund to build a simple steel-and-concrete temple, and named it Yen-pin Prefecture Temple. In 1984, because part of the land of the Temple was to be used as a road in the City’s construction project, and also because the Temple built in 1951 appeared to be old and rundown, so the Management Committed decided to have it rebuilt. In 1997, the new Yen-pin Prefecture Temple was completed and a grand inaugural ritual was held to celebrate the occasion. This is the magnificent Temple that we see today.
