Vorbemerkung

Werner Suerbaum ist nicht nur ein großer Bibliograph, sondern auch ein weiser Mann. Immer wieder mahnte er mich eindringlich, ich solle auf meine weißen Hefte meinen Namen schreiben. Ich aber blieb verstockt, weil mir das Zusammenstellen von Titeln sowie deren Aufschlüsselung durch Indizes keine besondere Leistung zu sein scheint und ich im übrigen bei diesen Bibliographien, die primär für befreundete Kollegen und die Münchner Studenten der Klassischen Philologie bestimmt sind, nie im Suerbaumschen Sinne Vollständigkeit und absolute Perfektion, geschweige denn eine publikationsreifes Ergebnis anstrebe. Jetzt ist jedoch Folgendes geschehen: Eine der vier Bibliographien in Heftform, die in die vorliegende Bibliographie eingingen (Properz I-III; Properz IV; Corpus Tibullianum; Ovid, Amores) wurde gewissermaßen plagiiert. Ich hatte das Heft einer befreundeten Kollegin geschenkt, durch diese wiederum war an einen befreundeten Kollegen, von dem sie wußte, daß er einschlägig arbeitete, eine Kopie weitergeleitet worden, und der – “nicht faul”, wie es so schön bei den Brüdern Grimm heißt – setzte die Bibliographie, nachdem er sie überarbeitet hatte (oder hatte überarbeiten lassen), an das Ende seines neuen Buches. Zwar verrät er nicht, daß er eine Vorlage benutzen konnte, aber der kundige Textkritiker hat das Stemma schnell erstellt, zum Beispiel mit Hilfe übersehener Fehler. Nun, da das neue Buch in englischer Sprache verfaßt ist – “the language which we can all understand”, in die überzugehen David Niven in Death on the Nile bittet, als jemand etwas auf Französisch zu sagen gewagt hat –, werden die Früchte meiner (harten!) bibliographischen Arbeit wenigstens anonym der ganzen Welt zugänglich, und das finde ich ja auch wieder höchst erfreulich – danke, danke, lieber Plagiator! Außerdem geschähe es mir, wenn ich mich denn ärgerte (was ich natürlich tue), einfach deswegen recht, weil ich nicht auf Werner den Weisen hören wollte.

Wie im Falle der Aeneis-Bibliographie (München 2004) lege ich erneut nicht einfach ein Heft, sondern einen weißen Riesen vor, aber in ihn sind, wie gesagt, die vier Hefte früherer Jahre aufgenommen, die somit den Grundstock des neuen Schriftenverzeichnisses bilden. Sie wurden, da noch mit der guten, alten Olympia geschrieben, gescanned [sic, David?], weshalb trotz aller Korrekturgänge gelegentlich eine 7 für eine 1 etc. übrig sein könnte. Die Hefte entstanden sukzessive in den Jahren 1997/8 und sind nach unterschiedlichen Prinzipien erarbeitet, und das ist an dem Konzept der vorliegenden Bibliographie noch erkennbar. Hier also erst einmal die Schichtenanalyse bezüglich der verarbeiteten Hefte:
1. Properz: Für diesen Elegiker trug ich zunächst nur die Literatur zu Buch 4 zusammen (Redaktionsschluß: Ende April 1997), wobei ich außer den “Klassikern” systematisch die Titel ab 1960 erfaßte. Dann folgte die Bibliographie zu Buch 1-3 (Redaktionsschluß: Ende August 1998), die ich, weiser geworden, an Fedeli/Pinotti 1985 anknüpfen ließ, so daß außer den dort fehlenden Titeln und den “Klassikern” nur die ab 1983/4 erschienene Literatur aufgenommen wurde. Dadurch kommt es, daß auch in der vorliegenden Bibliographie die Forschung zu Buch 4 ausführlicher dokumentiert wird als zu Buch 1-3, aber das halte ich für sinnvoll, weil das verstärkte Interesse an dem Callimachus Romanus noch relativ frisch ist und deshalb entsprechend eindringlich zur Weiterarbeit angespornt werden soll.

2. Corpus Tibullianum: Auch hier (Redaktionsschluß: Ende April 1998) verzeichnete ich außer den “Klassikern” die seit 1960 erschienene Literatur.

3. Ovid, Amores: Da diese Gedichtsammlung eines Unexpected Classic von meinen in Fragen der künstlerischen Qualität von Literatur ungemein treffsicheren Zunftgenossen bis in jüngere Zeit weitgehend vernachlässigt wurde, nahm ich in das Heft (Redaktionsschluß: Mitte September 1998) alles an Titeln auf, was ich im Laufe langjähriger Beschäftigung mit Bruder Naso in meinen Karteikasten aufgenommen hatte.
Das alles ist nun nicht nur sorgfältig bis zum Jahr 2004 aktualisiert, sondern überdies ergänzt durch gattungsübergreifende Literatur sowie Titel zu Gallus, wobei wiederum neben “Klassikern” vor allem Bücher und Aufsätze der letzten dreißig bis vierzig Jahre, soweit sie nicht schon in den vier Heften genannt waren, möglichst vollständig berücksichtigt sind. Neu hinzu kamen Rezensionen (weitgehend vollständig zu Titeln der jüngsten Zeit, bei älteren nur, wenn ich sie auf meinen alten Karteikarten verzeichnet fand) und im Bereich des jeweils zweiten Teils eines Heftes, in dem die Titel inhaltlich erschlossen werden, zusätzlich zum index locorum ein Stichwortregister. Dieses erhebt freilich keinerlei Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit, weil ich mich – durchaus nicht bereit, alles zu lesen (nein, ganz und gar nicht!) oder auch nur mit dem Ziel des Durchblätterns auf dem Radl aus der Stabi heranzukarren (wenn es nicht in unserer nach wie vor zur Weltspitze gehörenden Institutsbibliothek vorhanden war) – in vielen Fällen auf Forschungsberichte oder gar Vermutung anhand der Überschrift verließ.

Wer mir dabei geholfen hat? Klar, der Staat gestattet denen, die seine reifere Jugend zu akademischen Abschlüssen geleiten, eine(n) Vertreter(in) dieser Gruppe als Mitarbeiter(in) für ein paar Stunden pro Woche anzuheuern, und zahlt diesem/dieser ein lützel Handgeld. Aber was soll er/sie, der/die den in meinen Augen geradezu diskriminierenden Titel “studentische Hilfskraft” trägt (wir sind und bleiben in unserem offiziellen Sprachgebrauch – und nicht nur da! – ein Volk von wenig sympathischen Vollzugsbeamten und Oberlährern. Wenn man doch wenigstens mit Goethe “Hülfskraft” sagte!), schon bewerkstelligen unter diesen Voraussetzungen? Um so dankbarer bin ich, daß die vier netten youngsters, die mir im Zeitraum 1997-2004 zur Hand gingen – Dietmar Weiss, Christian Zgoll, Sven Lorenz und Regina Höschele – dennoch eine große Hilfe waren: ευχαριστώ πολύ, Ihr Vier! Sehr wichtig war aber auch die Tatsache, daß befreundete Elegieforscher in mehrerer Herren Länder immer wieder sowohl Hinweise gaben als auch Bücher und Sonderdrucke sandten (also nicht nur eines meiner Hefte an einen Lignomontanus impersonatus weiterleiteten); mit besonderem Dank nenne ich hier folgende classicists: Alessandro Barchiesi, Joan Booth, Gerlinde Bretzigheimer, Francis Cairns, Antonio De Caro, Rosalba Dimundo, Siegmar Döpp, Alessandro Franzoi, Paolo Fedeli, Roberto Gazich, Roy Gibson, Gregory Hutchinson, Philip Hardie, Stephen Harrison, Konrad Heldmann, Stephen Hinds, Judith Hallett, Stephen Heyworth, Markus Janka, Alison Keith, Wilhelm Kierdorf, Peter Knox, Mario Labate, Guy Lee, James McKeown, John Miller, Robert Maltby, Gabriella Moretti, Sara Myers, Raffaele Perrelli, Gianpiero Rosati, Alison Sharrock, Wilfried Stroh, Jula Wildberger, Erich Woytek und Maria Wyke. Zwei der Genannten möchte ich dadurch hervorheben, daß ich ihnen diesen weißen Riesen widme: Alison Sharrock und Maria Wyke. Denn diese beiden Kolleginnen, mit denen ich nicht nur korrepondieren, sondern auch manches “schöne” Gespräch (im Sinne Thomas Manns) führen durfte, haben meiner Tätigkeit im Bereich der römischen Liebeselegie durch ihre Überlegungen zur puella scripta und zur womanufacture (eine Wortprägung, die nicht direkt auf Alison, sondern ihren Mann zurückgeht!) so entscheidende Impulse gegeben, daß ihnen ganz einfach mal wenigstens auf diese Weise meinen Dank abstatten muß.
