Group 1: Metropolis Physics 199: Science Fiction Science In this assignment, you will write a short essay on issues explored in Metropolis. Read this entire assignment before you watch the episodes so that you will know what to look for. Each student will write on a different question. Part 1: Watch Film, think about questions The following are the questions for the three members of the group. Student A: Analyze the portrayal of society’s future in Metropolis based on research into the pressing social issues of the day in the mid-1920’s. In conducting your research, pay particular attention to the actual divide between workers and the wealthy and the existence of a middle class. Do the economic and social trends of the 1920’s support the development of the city of the future from the movie? Use specific examples from the film and your research to support your answer. Student B: Analyze the portrayal of the technological future in Metropolis based on research into the technological and scientific state of the 1920’s. In particular, use your research to determine whether the miniaturization of the latter part of the 20th century could have been predicted in the 1920’s. (Miniaturization is what has saved us from the large city of machines portrayed in the film.) Do the technological trends and scientific understanding of the 1920’s support the development of a future technology as portrayed in the film. Use specific examples from the film and your research to support your answer. Student C: Pick one “stock” science fiction theme, character, or plot line present in Metropolis that carry through to movies of today. Describe in detail how this idea was used in Metropolis and how it has either remained the same or been modified in later films. (To answer this question well, you may consider re-watching some films that you believe have similar themes.) Use specific evidence from various films in your answer. |
